The National Afforestation Campaign project is an urban afforestation initiative in Baghdad City.1 The project involves creating new green spaces by planting more than 100,000 trees across different city areas.2 The initiative is part of a larger national campaign initiated by Iraq’s Ministry of Agriculture,3 aiming at planting more than 5 million trees in different Iraqi regions.4 i
The project aims to enhance the city’s quality and livability by creating green spaces,5 mitigate the effects of climate change by planting perennial trees that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and play a key role in cooling the environment,6 and promote social well-being by preserving biodiversity and natural resources. Additionally, these efforts will contribute to strengthening the green belt and lowering temperatures.7
The campaign involves planting 101,000 perennial trees, along with various shrubs and seedlings, by municipal departments as part of the autumn agricultural season plan.8 These trees specifically include Acacia, palm trees, and eucalyptus.9

The campaign will cover all areas of Baghdad city, including schools, universities, residential neighborhoods,10 public parks, city squares and areas along the main streets.11 Trees with wide canopies and hardy shrubs planted during the campaign have been produced by the Mayoralty departments and propagated in their plant nurseries.12
The project adopted a participatory approach during its implementation phase, involving community members, local civic organizations, and other stakeholders.13 More than 200 volunteer teams are part of the campaign.14
The campaign also includes activities for raising awareness guided by the Mayoralty of Baghdad, highlighting the crucial role of green spaces in combating extreme heat and pollution. These efforts emphasize the importance of active participation in tree plantation and upkeep.15 By fostering a sense of community and responsibility among Baghdad’s residents, the initiative aims to encourage contributions towards a greener, healthier urban environment. Through these efforts, the mayoralty seeks to create a sustainable and clean city for current and future generations.16
The project incorporates modern irrigation techniques, including drip irrigation systems and fixed sprinklers, alongside solar-powered systems, to ensure long-term sustainability.17
The project is initiated by the Mayoralty of Baghdad18 and Iraq’s Ministry of Agriculture.19 It is under implementation by the Mayoralty in coordination with various municipal departments of Baghdad, in collaboration with civil society organizations and governmental bodies.20
