Al Hilal Linear Park is an urban park located in Qatar.1 Also known as Al Najma Street Park, it is referred to as ‘Linear’ due to its form,2 which follows a new concept that entails the transformation of land along highways into green spaces or parks.3
According to the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, represented by the Public Parks Department, the vision of the Linear Park is to “transform urban roadside spaces into vibrant, green, and environmentally friendly recreational areas promoting a healthy lifestyle.”45

The Linear Park is an example of the transformation of underutilized sites into vibrant green areas for the recreation and enjoyment of users.6 The park seeks to transform spaces along streets and highways into green areas that provide citizens and residents with opportunities for outdoor exercise, offering a natural and pleasant environment where people can engage in activities.7

The Linear Park features both soft and hard landscapes. It offers dedicated pathways for walking, jogging, and cycling,8 adorned with a variety of trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers.9 It also includes community amenities such as food carts, seating areas, and an artificial salt canal for recreation.10

The Linear Park is located in the Al Hilal11 area of Old Airport along Al Najma Street, near Al Thumama, The Mall, and Qatar Charity headquarters.12 This 1.5-kilometer-long and 50-meter-wide park spans a total area of 75,000 square meters.13 It runs parallel to Najma Street,14 between the Kahramaa and The Mall traffic intersections.15 It is accessible by public transportation, with Bus No. 3 stopping directly at the park.16 It features separate tracks for walking and cycling, as well as pavements with benches, beautiful trees, and colorful flowers, creating an inviting environment for visitors.17

The Linear Park has become a social gathering site for families and friends, particularly during the weekends.18 The park, with its vibrant green lawns and trees, attracts many visitors to engage in outdoor activities.19 It is especially favored by families and children who frequently visit in the afternoons for walking, jogging, and cycling along wide fitness trails.202122 The park’s greenery provides a serene environment for these activities, making it a key recreational space for residents of the surrounding neighborhoods.23

The development of the Linear Park was a collaborative effort initiated by Municipal Council member Sheikha Al-Jufairi.24 The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), through its Public Parks Department,25 partnered with the Public Works Authority (AshghalQatar) to construct the park.26 The landscaping company, AG Middle East, handled the specialized maintenance of the park’s irrigation and landscaping.27 Additionally, the Municipal Council members ensured the effective implementation of their recommendations throughout the project.28

Implementation of the park began in 2018,29 and it opened with no access fees to the public in February 2019.30 In 2022, the Linear Park became increasingly popular, especially after the FIFA World Cup 2023, as well as residents seeking nearby green spaces for family outings and active winter activities, drawn by the atmosphere it offers.31
