The project envisions the “promotion of eco-friendly transportation and integration of renewable energy fostering sustainable urban development”. By providing a safe, dedicated cycling route, the project enhances mobility, reduces vehicle emissions, and mitigates the effects of climate change. Additionally, it aims to improve traffic flow and road safety by minimizing congestion and reducing accidents.
The Erbil Bicycle Pathway will span a total length of 40 kilometers, featuring a fully dedicated cycling route with no intersections or shared paths with cars or pedestrians. To ensure safety, pedestrian overpasses will be installed every 2 kilometers, preventing unauthorized entry and reducing accident risk. Further, protective barriers on both sides will secure the lane, guaranteeing a safe and uninterrupted cycling experience.
As a proof of concept, a 100-meter pilot section has already been implemented, demonstrating the project’s feasibility and design.
Environmental sustainability is at the core of the project, with key initiatives including:
Beyond transportation, the Erbil Bicycle Pathway will encourage an active lifestyle by providing a safe and accessible space for cycling. Additionally, it will serve as a recreational hub, promoting outdoor activities and offering a scenic, green environment for residents to enjoy. By integrating health, fitness, and leisure, the project will contribute to a healthier and more livable city.
The project is initiated and funded by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). The project was designed by Nova Studio Group.
