The Adly Mansour Transportation Hub is a new development project located in Cairo, Egypt, serving as a central interchange hub for metro, bus, and rail networks.1 As the largest multi-modal transportation hub in the Middle East and Africa, it seamlessly integrates multiple transport systems under one roof.2
Construction commenced in 2018 after President Abdel Fattah El-SISi laid the foundation stone, with full launch in July 2022.3 It envisions a “modern, integrated transportation gateway for Cairo and the region”.4 Its objectives align with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the National Strategy for Sustainable Transport.5 Its key goals include enhancing urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, supporting economic growth,6 and strengthening connections between Cairo’s suburbs and new cities, including the New Administrative Capital.7

Spanning 15 feddans (63000 square meters), the Adly Mansour Transportation Hub offers a comprehensive mix of transit and commercial facilities,8 including:

  • A central metro station linking Line 3 and future metro expansions, designed to handle high passenger volumes.9
  • Bus terminals, taxi stands, and parking areas designed to facilitate seamless intermodal transfers.10
  • A light Rail Transit (LRT) system connecting the hub to the New Administrative Capital and other emerging cities.
  • Retail spaces and food courts, providing convenience for commuters.11
  • A dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system ‘Adly Mansour’ for better urban connectivity.
  • Pedestrian bridges and air-conditioned waiting areas to enhanced accessibility and comfort.12
  • Sustainability features, including solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems, to reduce environmental impact.13
  • Smart digital infrastructure, such as real-time tracking screens, to optimize passenger flow.14
  • A modular design, allowing for future expansions, including potential connections to regional rail networks.15

The Egyptian government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, led the project, with the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) overseeing technical execution.16 Engineering and construction were managed through a joint venture between Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction.17 Implementation and development took place in three main phases:

  • First Phase [2018-2020]: Site preparation and tunnel boring for Line 3 extensions.18
  • Second Phase [2020-2022]: Construction of terminals and installation of smart systems.19
  • Third Phase [2022-Ongoing]: Operational testing and integration with regional rail networks.20

Not yet fully operational, Adly Mansour Transportation Hub has garnered international acclaim, winning ENR’s 2022 Best Project in Rail Transit and global recognition for its innovative design and execution.21 Future expansion plans tend to further extend metro and rail connections, accommodating Cairo’s growing population and increasing passenger demand.22
