The Obeidi Park project is an urban green project located in Al Rasafa district in east Baghdad city.1 The project involves transforming an abandoned dumping site into a public park.2 The project is part of Baghdad Mayoralty’s “Green Capital Strategy”i, which is a comprehensive plan aiming to revitalize abandoned and vacant areas in the city, transforming them into vibrant green spaces that will serve as new recreational centers for Baghdad families, in line with government directives. 34 The Green Capital strategy aims to create a clean environment and mitigate climate change effects by increasing green spaces in the capital city of Baghdad.5

The project aims to enhance the quality of life for residents by establishing a public space devoted to recreation, entertainment, and outdoor activities.6 It also seeks to preserve the environment by creating an urban lung that decreases pollution in the capital city.7
It extends over a total area of 25,000 square meters.8 It is designed to provide visitors and residents with recreational, environmental, social, sports, and economic activities. It will serve as a perfect place to stroll, relax, and organize picnics.
Specifically, it includes the following components:
The park’s public and recreational areas attract visitors, particularly individuals from surrounding neighborhoods, residents, and families seeking relaxation and play areas for their children.17 The project also attracts athletes due to the presence of the sports trials and courts. 18
The project is initiated and funded by the Mayoralty of Baghdad.19 It was implemented by the Projects Department of the Baghdad Mayoralty in coordination with the Al-Ghadeer Municipality.20
The Park was inaugurated in 2024 and is open to the public all days of the week, without any entrance fee.21
