The Future Loop aims to redefine urban mobility in Dubai by integrating pedestrian climate-controlled pathways with public transportation, fostering a sustainable, interconnected urban experience. It supports Dubai’s Quality of Life Strategy 2033 and the “20-minute city” goal for 2040, providing 80 per cent of residents with access to essential amenities within a short commute, while promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing the city’s carbon emissions.
To implement this vision, a comprehensive master plan was proposed, including the construction of a 2-kilometer elevated walkway, 30,000 square meters of air-conditioned outdoor spaces, and the development of eco-friendly infrastructure. It also incorporates approximately 6,200 meters of bridges and tunnels to improve road traffic flow by 30% and facilitate smoother citywide connectivity.
The Future Loop is a 93-kilometer long Structure, connecting 10 iconic landmarks, including the Museum of the Future, Dubai World Trade Centre, Emirates Towers, Dubai International Financial Centre, and Downtown Dubai. The enclosed walkway will vary between 6 and 15 meters in height, featuring green spaces, shaded rest areas, commercial establishments, recreational areas, vertical farming, green hotels, shops, tourist attractions, and links to metro stations and cycling pathways for uninterrupted walking.
The Future Loop will benefit a wide range of users. Residents across Dubai will enjoy enhanced connectivity and easier access to essential services. Cyclists and pedestrians will gain access to uninterrupted pathways and green spaces, promoting healthier lifestyles. Tourists are drawn to the enclosed, air-conditioned walkway linking major landmarks, offering comfortable exploration even during extreme summer conditions. The project is widely seen as a step toward a more connected, sustainable city, with public enthusiasm tempered by a desire for minimal disruption during implementation.
Key stakeholders in The Future Loop include government authorities, urban planners, architects, and the general public. The project, developed by URB, was announced on December 7, 2024, by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Senior officials are responsible for overseeing its planning and implementation.
The $22 billion Future Loop is currently in its research and development phase, with implementation scheduled to begin in 2025. Construction will progress in stages to minimize disruptions and align with Dubai’s Long Term development strategies. The initial phase will focus on key routes and foundational infrastructure, followed by the expansion of the walkway network and the addition of amenities. The project will enhance connectivity across major areas, such as Expo City, Al Quoz, Downtown Dubai, and Academic City, with road infrastructure improvements planned for locations like Trade Centre Roundabout and Al Mustaqbal Street to improve traffic flow.
