Project Description

Approach Words:

Public Policy Instruments:

The Cairo Bike project is a new development initiative aimed at introducing a bike-sharing system in Egypt’s capital city, Cairo . This innovative project represents the first public bike-sharing system in the country, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility . The project was launched in October 2022, with the vision of “providing an eco-friendly and affordable transportation option for Cairo’s residents and visitors” .

The Cairo Bike project aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, promote public health through physical activity, and enhance the overall quality of life in the city . These objectives align with Egypt’s broader national strategy for sustainable urban development and environmental conservation .

To implement these objectives, the Cairo Bike project initially covers an area spanning over six square kilometers across Downtown Cairo, El-Sayeda Zainab, Garden City, and Al Attaba . The project includes the following components:
– A network of 250 bicycles distributed across 26 stations in the first phase
– Solar-powered stations with surveillance cameras
– A user-friendly mobile application allowing riders to rent bicycles for 1 Egyptian pound (about USD 0.05) per hour
– Integration with payment methods including credit cards and prepaid cards
– Plans to expand to 500 bicycles and 45 stations in the second phase

In terms of sustainability, the Cairo Bike project incorporates eco-friendly practices such as solar-powered stations and aims to create protected bike lanes . The project also seeks to promote cycling culture and provide alternative low-carbon transportation options . The initiative includes plans to construct 17 kilometers of protected bike lanes, with 2 kilometers already completed .

The Cairo Bike project is a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders. It was launched by the Cairo Governorate in 2016 with support from ITDP Africa, UN-Habitat, and the Swiss Drosos Foundation [4]. After a competitive bidding process, Rascom-Donkey, an Egyptian and Danish consortium, was selected to operate the bikeshare system . The project has already seen significant success, with over 25,000 users since its launch .
The implementation of the Cairo Bike project is divided into phases:
First Phase [October 2022]: Launch of 250 bicycles and 26 stations
Second Phase [Planned]: Expansion to 500 bicycles and 45 stations

Currently, the project continues to grow, with plans to further develop cycling infrastructure and promote inclusive mobility, particularly focusing on expanding transportation options for women [4][5]. The initiative aims to improve urban transportation, reduce carbon emissions, and create a more sustainable and accessible city transportation system .
