Djibouti New City

Djibouti New City is a large urban development project located in the Gabod district of Djibouti’s capital.¹ The new city is envisioned to “achieve a unique lifestyle”,² and it is part of Djibouti 2035’s vision that aims to modernize the city’s infrastructure, enhance economic growth, and improve overall livability.^{3 i}

The project seeks to address challenges of outdated and overburdened infrastructure by introducing a modern, integrated urban framework.
Its core objectives include:

• Providing high-quality housing solutions, including affordable residential options⁴
• Upgrading infrastructure to support sustainable urban growth⁵
• Enhancing economic opportunities through business and commercial hubs⁶
• Preserving Djibouti’s cultural heritage while promoting social integration and community development.⁷

To implement the project’s objectives, a master plan was proposed extending along an area of 125,000 square kilometers.⁸ This master plan features a diverse mix of residential, administrative, commercial and recreational spaces. Specifically, it includes the following components:^{9 10}

• Residential areas, comprising diverse housing options: 80 apartments and 215 villas
• Commercial district, featuring 60 retail shops
• Recreational and sports facilities, including parks and public spaces
• Business parks, including offices and corporate hubs
• Green spaces, promoting sustainability and urban aesthetics
• Cultural centers, showcasing city’s heritage
• Educational facilities, including schools and learning centers.

Djibouti New City aims to be an eco-friendly, self-sufficient development, incorporating sustainable infrastructure to ensure reliable energy solutions as well as a stable water supply system.

The project is initiated by Alhamdani for Real Estate Investments, in collaboration with the Djibouti government.¹¹ The master plan was designed and is under implementation by Alhamdani for Real Estate Investments.¹²
