Al-Faisaliah City is a large-scale urban development project in western Saudi Arabia, positioned strategically between the holy city of Makkah and the Red Sea coast.1 Spanning an area of 2,354 square kilometers,2 the project aims to accommodate 6.5 million people by 2050,3 positioning itself as a sustainable, smart, and globally competitive extension of Makkah and core pillar of Saudi Vision 2030.4
The city’s vision is “creating a new ecosystem with five catalytic development clusters” underscoring the potential of becoming a landmark development in the Kingdom.5

To implement the vision, Al-Faisaliah City includes the following components:
In terms of sustainability and innovation, Al-Faisaliah City is described as “the concrete translation of Saudi Arabia’s vision 2030 for the country to be a pioneering and successful global model of excellence”.10 The City will integrate smart community frameworks across six domains; smart economy, smart communication, smart living, smart environment, smart governance, and smart society. It aims to be energy self-efficient, targeting the production of 9.5 gigawatts of renewable energy, with projections rising to 18 gigawatts by 2030. meet the increasing local demand. Al-Faisaliah City is a project overseen by the Makkah Region Development Authority (MRDA), under the leadership of Prince Khaled Al-Faisal.14 It is designed to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and serve as a regional economic and commercial hub.15
In 2017, Al-Faisaliah City was officially announced as part of Saudi Arabia’s long-term development strategy (Vison 2030). The implementation is planned in seven phases, starting 2020 with full completion expected by 2050, each phase targeting certain progressive development.16
Given its strategic geographical location, the project is expected to become a regional logistics and investment hub, contributing to economic growth and reducing urban pressure on Makkah and Jeddah.17 It will contribute significantly to job creation, housing provision, and green infrastructure, serving as a model for future smart cities in the Gulf and beyond.18 19
