Green Hydrogen Project AMAN Mauritania

Dakhla, Mauritania

2020 - Ongoing

Project Description

Approach Words:

Public Policy Instruments:

The AMAN Project is a transformative green hydrogen initiative located in Mauritania’s northern desert and coastal regions, designed to harness the country’s exceptional solar and wind resources for large-scale renewable energy production. 1 Launched during COP26 in 2021, it is a joint venture between the Mauritanian government and CWP Global, to develop a 30 GW hybrid facility to position Mauritania as a global leader in green hydrogen. 2
The project envisions to “accelerate the development of green hydrogen to decarbonize heavy industries and transportation,” in alignment with global climate objectives. 3

The AMAN Project seeks to produce 1.7 million tonnes of green hydrogen and 10 million tonnes of green ammonia annually, alongside generating 50 million cubic meters of fresh water. 4 It contributes to Mauritania’s national strategy of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 92% and increasing renewable energy in the national mix to 60% by 2030. 5 Additionally, the project is expected to boost GDP by 50% and reduce unemployment by nearly one-third by 2030. 6
To implement the vision, the strategy of the project highlights Mauritania’s commitment to sustainable energy and its goal of becoming a key player in the global green hydrogen market, 7
By integrating advanced renewable energy systems with cutting-edge green hydrogen production technologies, uniquely suited to Mauritania’s environmental conditions. 8

The AMAN project spans a vast area in Mauritania that consists of a 30 GW hybrid energy system using wind and solar power, 9 green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities, 10 and integrated desalination plants. 11 Key sectors involved include renewable energy, water management, green industry, logistics and training programs. 12
The AMAN Project embodies values of sustainability, economic inclusion, environmental stewardship, and innovation. These are achieved through 100% reliance on renewable energy resources, water-efficient technologies, and workforce development. 13 To fulfill its strategic focus, the project integrates innovative green hydrogen technology with expansive renewable energy capacity. Desalination, grid storage, and international export infrastructure are developed in parallel for enhancing system sustainability and contribution to global market access. 14 15 Additionally, its design includes measures to make facilities accessible to individuals with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity in line with modern development standards. 16
