The Nouadhibou Port Development Project is a development infrastructure initiative aimed at expanding and modernizing the port facilities in Nouadhibou, Mauritania’s second-largest city and economic capital. This project focuses on dredging and widening the access channel to the Nouadhibou mineral port to expand the capacity of its port facilities .
The project envisions Nouadhibou as a key player in the global ore production sector, with the goal of improving the port’s efficiency, competitiveness, and resilience in the face of fluctuating global iron ore prices. It aims to boost the country’s export capabilities, particularly for iron ore, and strengthen Mauritania’s position in international markets. The project’s vision is to make Nouadhibou a critical hub for the country’s economy, enhancing its growth and development .
To implement these objectives, the Nouadhibou Port Development Project includes several key components:
– Deepening and widening of 25 km of the SNIM mineral terminal’s access channel, allowing it to accommodate ships up to 230,000 tonnes. This will significantly increase the port’s capacity and reduce transportation costs .
– Expansion of port facilities to increase efficiency and reduce the limitations imposed by the current depth, which only allows ships of up to 150,000 tonnes to dock .
– Creation of 94 full-time jobs during the construction phase and 230 indirect positions, contributing to local employment and economic growth .
– Support for the SNIM Foundation’s social activities in Mauritania, enhancing community development and social benefits .
In terms of sustainability, the project integrates traditional and modern environmentally-friendly practices. It focuses on sustainable water management, renewable energy installations, and the use of local materials for construction. The project aims to improve the environmental sustainability of the supply chain associated with SNIM’s business model by allowing bigger vessels to berth, which reduces the need for multiple smaller ships and thus lowers emissions .
The project is a collaboration between several key stakeholders. The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) are providing financial support, with the EIB contributing USD 59 million and the AfDB contributing USD 50 million over a 12-year period . The main implementing agency is Société nationale industrielle et minière (SNIM), Mauritania’s largest mining company and second-largest employer.
The project is being implemented in phases, with the current focus on the dredging and widening of the access channel. The construction is expected to last a total of 14 months . An environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) is being prepared, and public consultations will be undertaken to ensure compliance with environmental and social standards .
