To implement these objectives and to modernize the city’s public transportation system, the initiative currently operates 15 electric buses, with plans to introduce an additional 25 vehicles, forming a modern fleet of 40 buses. Each bus is designed to accommodate 90 passengers and is equipped with air conditioning, advanced tracking systems, onboard , and special accessibility modifications for people with disabilities .
Powered by rechargeable battery packs, the buses can travel up to 250 kilometers per charge (or 210 kilometers with air conditioning in use), with a charging time of three to four hours . In addition, the project integrates sustainable fuel technologies across Alexandria’s eastern and western routes, ensuring an environmentally responsible public transport system .
The Alexandria Green Transport Initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Alexandria Governorate, the Ministry of Transport, and the Public Transport Authority, which have collaborated closely with international partners and local . The initiative is structured into three phases:
• Phase 1: Deployment of the first 15 electric buses (currently operational)
• Phase 2: Introduction of an additional 25 buses to complete the fleet
• Phase 3: Full operational integration, with ongoing monitoring to maintain service quality .
With the first phase successfully completed, the initiative marks a significant step toward modernizing Alexandria’s public transport . It not only enhances commuter experience but also contributes to environmental conservation . Ultimately, this project serves as a benchmark for future sustainable transportation initiatives in Egypt .
